Our UNM Story - Part 1 | Shayn's Story
Shayn was raised with his three brothers not far from where we are now, on his family farm in West Jordan. He also spent a lot of time in Southern Utah with his grandparents in the small town of Veyo. Grandpa Braswell was a cowboy turned dairy farmer who was widely known for his horsemanship skills. Shayn learned so much by his side as they worked with the animals.
His childhood included hauling hay, shoeing horses, irrigating fields, castrating & branding calves, planting gardens, and tending to animals - cattle, pigs, rabbits, chickens, sheep, and even geese. And there was roping. Lots & lots of roping.
Shayn pretty much grew up on a horse. Some of his earliest memories are of his mom saddling his horse, Honey, each morning so he could just ride all day. This let to team roping in the backyard with his brothers and dad, and eventually participating in high school rodeos. He competed in both calf roping and team roping, making it to the state finals in both events several times.
He also had the opportunity to live in Costa Rica (3 years) and Peru (2 years) where he learned to speak Spanish fluently. When he returned from Peru his plan was to move to Veyo and work alongside his grandpa, but those plans changed just a few months later.
